About this site

This site was designed, like other sites before it, as a proof of concept. Using jQuery-powered DHTML techniques, progressively enhanced CSS3, as well as the Cufón font renderer, this site aims to demonstrate how much can now be acheived without the use of Flash. Taking advantage of the HTML 5 canvas element, the site is able to create scalable, dynamic vector graphics at runtime.

When I moved to Brooklyn, I was struck by how much more sky one sees, and by how much the light and weather affect one's surroundings. Using Yahoo's RSS weather feed and PHP's "sunfuncs," I created themes corresponding to environmental variables. The buildings are drawn with a short script I wrote which converts 3D coordinates into projected (x, y) coordinates for the faces' vertices (based on a specified angle of view and distance between the vanishing points in units of screen-widths).

Lastly, this site's headings are set in League Gothic and either Baskerville, or the system serif. All else copyright by Mark Silver. Please contact me if you wish to appropriate any of the scripts, content, or design seen here. (I don't bite!)
